The bits in SVN are the "raw" source tree I use for development -- on my FreeBSD
system. The release tarballs are "cooked" from this by stripping out some bits
(e.g., some test code which is probably non-portable) and replacing the build
code by POSIX Makefiles.
The only thing you're doing wrong is using ubuntu. ;-)
