In most cases, gzipping data will make it impossible for Tarsnap to recognize
unmodified blocks.  If you use the --rsyncable option to gzip (on versions
which support it) then it will be easier for Tarsnap; but it will still not
be as efficient as simply running Tarsnap on the uncompressed data.

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing.  Are you using tar(1) to create
a .tgz archive and then using Tarsnap to store that archive?  Why not simply
use Tarsnap directly?
