Another option would be to pipe the output to 'pv -pbl >/dev/null' to
eat the output but keep something running on the screen that's based
on the rate of tarsnap's stdout. (And optionally 'tee' the output into
a file before 'pv' if you want to save it for future reference.)
It probably doesn't affect the speed of the operation either but will
at least look cleaner as it won't spew thousands of lines of output.
