Re: Changing the name of a machine.

I had a similar issue. Some few years ago, I created a tarsnap account and put $5 in it to try it out. For some reason I don't remember - didn't work? Got busy?
Whatever.... I didn't use it at that time.

Fast forward to 2014: I have good reason for offsite backup. Due to certain factors, I have moved to a paperless office. This makes my computer data extremely valuable. So - it's kept on a Linux server-class machine with ECC ram. It's backed up every night with rsync to a second "hot-spare" server. It's also backed up to a NAS box - there, I
have 7 backups, one called "monday" another called "tuesday" etc.

So I tried tarsnap again. Hmm, what was that admin password? Darned if I know. No way to recover or reset it, either. So I started up another tarsnap account, put $50 in it, because this time I really plan to use it. Cool, now it works. Can't use my old/preferred
username though :(.

It probably makes sense to not have a password recovery function - one of those things that email you a link.... what if somebody hacked my email? Say somebody at the ISP watching the packets go into my machine? Or maybe somebody could hack my DNS records so my mailserver seemed to be in North Korea? Just thinking about this stuff makes me paranoid...

Would it be possible to completely close that account, deleting all storage

I suppose so, but why? That seems a bit of an extreme solution to a
purely cosmetic issue.

I'm pretty new to using Tarsnap and Linux in general so please forgive
me if I missed something obvious.

I'd really like to change the name of the machine I'm backing up on the website, that's because throughout my trial and error I have three or four machines with the same name in the web panel. I am using one of them successfully, it's been running for a few weeks now without any
problems whatsoever.

So is this possible, and if so can someone point me in the right
direction please?

This isn't possible right now, sorry. The good news is that the machine name is only used for displaying on the website, so it doesn't really
matter very much...
