I had a feeling that would be the proper way to handle backups with Tarsnap.

You might want to consider having that be a FAQ:
Q: What's the best way to have backups stored for Tarsnap?
A: Don't apply any compression (gzip, bzip, zip, tar.gz, etc) to your
data and let tarsnap handle the compression because doing the
compression yourself can only ever get in the way.
