Is that "pixels are either 100% transparent or 100% opaque"?  That would look
even worse for the Tarsnap logo, since the rounded edges wouldn't work properly.

I've been using imagemagick for converting EPS to *, and it also tends to
absolutely everything... except not this apparently.
