Unrecognized archive after rebooting

I'm getting 'unrecognized archive' messages after a system re-boots (via a cron job).

Seems like there's a partially create archive that is not consistent?

I suspect there's something I should do first with tarsnap before shutdown to avoid this, but haven't figured it out.
(Naively assumed tarsnap would handle the shutdown signal,....)
